Year Three: Advanced Painting

In the third and final year of the programme, students will master the more advanced skills of oil painting and begin to broaden their horizons through the expansion of their subject matter and their palette of colours, and by turning their attention towards pictorial composition.

Course Schedule:

DAYTIME LESSONS:

Monday - Friday, 10 am - 5 pm

EVENING LESSONS:

Monday, Wednesday & Thursday, 6 pm - 8 pm

The studio projects this year are divided between still life and sight-size portraiture. These genres will give students their first opportunity to explore composition. Additionally, one evening every week will be dedicated to a lecture covering the principals of pictorial design, aiding students in setting up and resolving their studio projects.

The figurative portion of the curriculum in the third year is designed to strengthen each students’ flexibility by challenging them to complete paintings in varying time limits. With poses ranging from 2-8 weeks, the goal for every project is to create a resolved painting, not necessarily a fully rendered one. Students will also be challenged by increasingly complex and expressive poses, and with a fully extended palette of colours.

The year culminates with an ambitious graduation project, personally designed by each student. The graduation project will be the student’s choice of either a figure painting, a portrait, or a still-life, which will demonstrate all of the skills accumulated over the course of the full three years in the core programme.
